Robotic Hysterectomy — What should you expect?

Earlier this month we featured an article about what a Robotic Hysterectomy is and why someone might need this surgery. In this article, we also covered the benefits and risks of this procedure. At Chouchani, Sayegh and Bagnarello we perform the Robotic Hysterectomy with the da Vinci®Surgical System – which means there are very small incisions and a quicker recovery time than traditional hysterectomies.

If you find out that you need to have a hysterectomy, you might wonder what you should expect before, during and after the procedure. Here are some answers…

BEFORE
You will have an exam by your physician before your scheduled procedure. In this appointment you will discuss medications that you are taking (over the counter and prescription). You may also be sent for blood work. Your doctor will give you a list of instructions to follow for the days leading up to your procedure – such as the cessation of alcohol, smoking and some medications.

DURING
surgeryDid you know that physicians have used the da Vinci System successfully worldwide in approximately 1.5 million surgical procedures to date?

The da Vinci System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, da Vinci enables your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.

Most often this procedure is done under general anesthesia. In other words, you will be asleep during surgery. You will be given an IV so that your doctor can administer drugs and fluids easily.

Once you are under anesthesia, this is what happens:

  • 3-4 tiny incisions are made in your abdomen.
  • Gas is pumped into your belly to give the surgeon room to work and a better view.
  • The laparoscope and other surgical instruments are inserted into your abdomen.
  • The surgeon will attach the laparoscope and the instruments to the robotic arms of the computer.
  • Your uterus is cut into small pieces that are easily removed from the small incisions.
  • You will have a few stiches and surgical bandages.

AFTER
Overall, recovery time varies from patient to patient. However, the da Vinci®Surgical System usually results in less pain and recovery time than the traditional hysterectomy. Your doctor will give you detailed instructions – please make sure to follow them carefully.
